Welcoming a new member into the family is a momentous occasion. While your house is sure to be filled with lots of giggles, it can also be a stressful time learning to manage your newest teammate. Add in lack of sleep, and you’re purchasing your ticket for the struggle bus at 3am. To find a routine that works for your crew, implement these tips to make your days as smooth as possible.

Create Zones

If you’ve learned anything this far into the mom-game, it’s that toddlers have limited control of their bodies. Even when they’re trying to be gentle, they tumble and trip like it’s going out of style. Find some piece of mind by setting up zones where baby can be safe from toddler’s stumbles. This may include a play yard set up in the living room, or a special toddler chair in the nursery where your older tot can play quietly during feedings and diaper changes.

Give Yourself Grace

The standards you had pre-baby may need to be reestablished. Limiting screen-time? It’s okay if an extra episode slips in so you can get your newborn settled. Chicken nuggets for lunch and dinner? If your kids are loved and fed, you are winning!

Find Your Village

Although you might have imagined the day you brought a new baby home, a village magically appeared to clean your house and cook all your meals, that’s not quite the case. Set the foundation for a strong support network before you return from the hospital. Inquire if your neighborhood has a local mom group. Contact your hospital to see what support they offer new moms. Not only can these aid in breastfeeding and newborn care, it can also introduce you to other moms in the area. Mom “dating” apps, such as Peanut, are another great option!

Get Comfortable with Baby-Wearing

Sometimes you’re just going to need two hands. With a million baby-wearing options, it can be overwhelming determining what works best for you. If you’re looking for something less structured, the Moby wrap might be the perfect option for you. Want something with all the bells and whistles? The Ergo has a number of styles for all of your needs. Looking for an alternative that’s in between? The K’Tan is one of our favorites!

Being a mother of a newborn and a toddler is no easy task, but creating an environment that sets you up for success is sure to encourage far more giggles than tears. These tidbits are sure to help you embrace this challenging, albeit brief, season of life.
